The art of storytelling is perhaps one of the oldest and most kept traditions in the world. Its importance does not only lie on its entertainment purposes, but also for its ability to instill moral lessons and pass traditional knowledge from one generation to the next. In Carter’s story, entitled The Company of the Wolves, these functions were shown based on how the author has used symbolism and similes in telling the tale. On the one hand, it is shown in the story that human beings could become ‘werewolves’ on their own (Simpson, 2006). Werewolves are used by Carter to show that a person could both be vile, evil, and blood-hungry while also being soft and empathetic on the other.
