Yes, cross-cultural misunderstandings destroyed Lia’s life. The Hmong people, as demonstrated by chapter 18 in the book, did not believe in medicine treating the different ailments they faced. These people’s belief was a little medicine went hand-in-hand with spiritual healing. The spiritual healing process aimed at eliminating blame for the disease from the ailing individual and setting their spirit free in readiness for healing. In Lia’s case, however, her doctors Neil and Peggy failed to consider this cultural belief of the Hmong people that was integral in recovery (Fadiman, 1998). Consequently, they pushed for total compliance to the treatment regimen that drove her family away from medicine, thereby resulting in the ruining of her life.
