According to the narrator, Scott Pelley (NBC 60 Minutes, 2011), close to 25% of children in the US (that is 1 out of 4) live in poverty. In the video, Pelley interviews a number of children (and family members) who have experienced homelessness, living on the streets, in cars, and in shelters. As you reflect on the video and on Chapter 1 of the text Behavior Management: Principles And Practices of Positive Behavior Support, consider how various theorists would assess the needs of children living in poverty.
Select two of the following theoretical frameworks:
Developmental
Psychodynamic
Ecological
Social Learning
Discuss how proponents of each framework would analyze two of the children or families in the videos. What would they want educators to know or be aware of as they structure learning environments for each child? What were some sources of strength for the child (children) or the family? How might teachers make use of those sources of strength in creating educational environments that support learning?

Children’s learning is not solely dependent upon the effectiveness of the teacher or the skills of the child. Rather, it is affected by a multitude of factors which spans from the internal to external ones. In the video entitled Hard Times Generation – Homeless Kids the adverse effect of the Great Recession to the kids’ learning were shown. While it is the responsibility of the State to work towards a solution to the problem, teachers also share the obligation to help the kids cope to these hard times. In this article, children’s behavior in relation to the effects of the Great Recession would be discussed using two theories, namely, (1) ecological and (2) biophysical. After the determination of these problems using the enumerated approach, a discussion of the strategies for structuring learning environments would follow. All in all, the author of this article believes that through a careful consideration of the factors that affects student education, teachers could help alleviate the effects of problems and increase learning on the part of the student.
Theoretical Approaches
As shown in the short film, the Great Recession has brought about a sharp increase (from 14 million to 16 million) in the number of homeless and hungry kids across the United States CITATION CBS11 \l 1033 (News, 2011). In turn, this affected other facets of their lives including their capacity to study.
On the one hand, the Ecological Model would view the student’s difficulties as arising from the systems where they live and they interact with. School children, like the one in the video, is often viewed as having “three systems which include the classroom, peer group, and the family” CITATION Uni18 \l 1033 (University of Kansas, 2018). Accordingly, behaviors are viewed in relation to the different triggers that occur in the kid immediate environment, which is usually ...
