Introduction
Drinking alcohol is quite a common problem among teenagers in recent years. Most teenagers and adolescents believe that low alcohol is merely an inexpensive and safe way to relax, disregarding the hazardous effects of alcohol. The teenagers are adversely affected by alcoholism, both physically and mentally. Alcohol consumption results in low self-esteem and a deprived quality of life. Therefore, it is imperative to solve this prevailing issue in the early days to reduce the risk of developing mental and physical health issues among teenagers. Underage teenagers take alcohol due to a number of factors such as peer influence, idleness, lack of proper care or guidance, and the media.
Causes of this problem
Peer influence is perhaps the single major cause of alcoholism among underage teenagers and simply teenagers in general. Teenagers need a perception of affiliation. School years are the only period in everyone’s life when the feelings of belonging to a group, general standards of behavior, peer opinions serve as a prerequisite for personal development (Nelson, 2010). Teenagers will always strive to fit into a certain group that they admire, whether it is a good one or not. Unfortunately, most of these peer groups usually end up being bad company. These youngsters end up doing anything to prove that they ‘qualify’ to be part of the group, including taking alcohol. Barker (2011) notes that “quite interestingly, teenagers don’t coerce each other into it, rather, the influence happens so softly and seamlessly.”
Secondly, the media plays a role too. So often, advertisements on TV, radio and even online on social media platforms usually portray taking alcohol as very ‘cool.’ Ironically, these advertisements usually come at primetime, when everyone is at home and watching TV (Piehl, 2010). These teenagers are still very young individuals trying to carve out an identity for themselves. Moreno(2011) asserts that in 2009 alone, alcohol companies invested over $1 b in advertisements on sites that are frequented by teenagers. The aim is to appeal to them. As a result, they will pick up anything that will make them feel good or look good before people. If the media makes it look good to take alcohol, why not do it in order to look cool as well?
