Tea and coffee are rich in caffeine an alkaloid with stimulant characteristics. The application of extraction technique to extract the caffeine content in tea was undertaken to separate the organic substances. Dichloromethane is the organic solvent where dichloromethane and water are immiscible liquids that separate in the separatory funnel. We calculated the caffeine content after the extraction and compared the results the results obtained with those of the best rang. Our result of the experiment is 0.0145g caffeine (lower than best rang 0.05g-0.07). Based on the data the tea would require higher quantities to get similar concentrations than better tea varieties.
Introduction
Extraction is a process of separating a substance that can be dissolved in two solvents that are immiscible with each other, with a different degree of solubility. Caffeine extraction from tea and coffee is one such experiment, and the ratio of the concentration of the substances in the solvents is constant at a certain temperature. Plants are rich in various organic compounds like alkaloids, and caffeine is an alkaloid. In decaffeinated coffee, caffeine is removed this now more common, and caffeine is extracted using an organic solvent (Franzen, 2016). In the experiment, caffeine is isolated from the tea leaves, and coffee using solvent extraction and caffeine is readily soluble in hot water. Dichloromethane is the organic solvent, which makes it possible to transfer the caffeine form an aqueous extract to the organic phase, and caffeine is more soluble in dichloromethane than in water (Vuong & Roach, 2014). The objective of the experiment is to extract caffeine from tea leaves and know about the solid-liquid and liquid-liquid extraction techniques and separate caffeine from tea leaves. In the experiment, caffeine was extracted from the tea solution where two tea bags worth of were used, dichloromethane and then extraction
Experimental (Procedure)
The materials, reagents, and equipment that was used during the caffeine extraction practice of including the reagents, which are caffeine, of sodium carbonate and dichloromethane. There are also there are two bags of tea, 50mL beakers 125mL Erlenmeyer flasks, Pasteur pipet, 100 mL round Bottom flasks and analytical balance.
Place 50 mL of hot boiling water and two bags of tea into the 100 mL beaker. Subsequently, the infusion was allowed to steep for 10 minutes, and the liquid squeezed into the beaker without breaking the bags.
The aqueous tea solution is transferred to a separation funnel and added 0.5 g of sodium carbonate added to the liquid in the separatory funnel. Then secure the separatory funnel properly and will gently mix until the solid dissolves, and the tea solution is allowed to cool to room temperature.
