From the earliest known cultural norms and values though early modern Europe (in the 1700's) there were both positive and negative assessments of alcoholic beverages. These beliefs were not based on a scientific understanding of the effects of these beverages. Compare and contrast the historical evidence about the earliest cultural messages about the consumption of alcoholic beverages with the assertions which dominated early modern Europe. What do you think are some of the most important the social forces and social facts that created these evolving attitudes? What do you see as the most important social forces contributing to the more positive attitudes and assertions and the more negative assertions? Up the middle ages, the alcoholic beverages in Europe were mainly made through fermentation mostly beer and wine, but in the early modern Europe Distilled spirits, became more common. Additionally, alcohol entrenched in the daily diets of Europeans there was support for drinking alcoholic beverages for dietary and health purposes, but the protestants s were more concerned that the Catholics often ignored the impact and effect of heavy drinking, which they saw as immoral. Controlling alcohol consumption was more common in areas with many protestants, but wine became an integral part of holy communion, but adult males were the heaviest consumers in Europe and even after exploring the new world.
Alcoholic beverages became more common among the elite and popular cultures, and the people mainly drank socially and alcohol as considered part of the diet. Unlike in other societies where alcoholic beverages were used for myriad ceremonies, alcohol was more common in Europeans daily life. Over time there were concerns that the alcoholic beverages were linked to threats to social disruption and intoxication that posed risk to drinkers.
