The use of rhetoric in communication is crucial for the proper functioning of society. Regardless of the purpose, audience, and form of communication, the ability to persuade anyone is important in order to effectively interact with one another. An example where this importance plays a huge role could be seen in an article written by Hersher and Johnson (2017), entitled “Trump Administration Rescinds Obama Rule On Transgender Students' Bathroom Use”. In this article, the authors talked about the subsequent repeal of the Trump Administration’s of the bathroom priveleges granted to transgender students by the previous Administration. Upon reading the piece, the author of this article believes that despite the seemingly ‘narrative’ approach of the article, the use of different rhetorical strategies have made it persuasive enough for people to see the Trump Administration’s move in a negative light.
Rhetorical Strategies
One of the main rhetorical strategies used in the article is logos, or the use of evidence and facts. This appeal to one’s reason have been aptly presented in two ways, namely (1) the overall format of the article and (2) the extensive use of quotations. On the one hand, the authors have tried to present its contents as objective as possible, which is similar with a news format. They did not even present any arguments ‘directly’, but simply let their readers to know about the facts of the situation.
