Raymond Carver tells the story of a blind widower by the name Robert who he developed a close relationship with the narrator’s wife, creating insecurity. Despite his reluctance in welcoming of Robert into his house, he felt out of place, and couldn’t stand being neglected in their talks. Robert realized his hateful attitude towards him. For that reason, he gave him a challenge of closing his eyes while drawing the cathedral as being displayed on the TV. They ended up drawing the same picture despite their ideological difference and physical disabilities. It symbolized great reunion of two distanced souls (Boyle, 2017).
Gregory Boyle is one of the most prominent people in Christian history. Boyle shares his story to reveal the great work of God, as well as God's love in transforming his life, from a gang member to a priest. “The world is steeped in God. Grace indeed is everywhere,” these are his words while suggesting that God’s miracles unfold before us in ordinary circumstances (Boyle, 2017). When Philip: one of his gang members died, he felt a purposeless and worthless human being and he reunited with God.
Andrew Dubus describes sacraments as God’s love, “sacraments is an outward sign of God’s love” (Dubus, 2001). In a way, Dubus says that sandwiches are human sacraments to their fellows, as long as it’s given with love, kindness holiness and sincerity. Besides, he gives a story of a lame divorced father who made sandwiches for his two daughters daily, as a sacrament. Despite his disability, he tried to view everything as a gift and not a curse. He later fell in love with a dark skin lady, which he saw as a sacrament too. Her existence encouraged him even in his father’s death.
