Immanuel Kant
Immanuel Kant is a German scholar and a philosopher who believed that reason is the source of morality. In his leadership theory, he is firm on the negativity of actions like lying, stealing, and murder. He believed that these actions should never be tolerated even if the reason for the actions would result in more happiness (Kant, 1785). In Kantian ethics, he stood firm about a leader and any person questioning their actions before acting. Kant proposed two questions that would serve as a weighing scale before one undertakes an action. According to him, you should ask yourself whether your move will please everyone and whether it is for everyone's benefit. If the answer to the two questions was 'no,' Kant believed that you should not act. It contributed to the decision-making process (Kant, 1785). The decision to act was based on the fulfillment of the duty and not the consequences.
According to Kant, good leaders do and adhere to their duty because it is expected of them. He argues that the law should not have exceptional for others to break (Kant, 1785). For example, when a police officer enforces the rule about wearing masks because of the COVID-19 pandemic, he should be wearing one before asking those who do not wear them for reasons. Actions of any leader should not necessarily please everyone, according to Kant. Kant personally had a selfless personality, yet that had nothing to do with his theory. If he were a leader in our midst, his goal would be to lead by example by following his orders and expectations as a leader. He would not care about the outcome of his action. Kant would neither lie nor kill in case of difficult situations.
Kant argues that an action is only genuine when duty is the driving force of performing the act. A person has to tell the truth, according to Kant, no matter the consequences. It does not matter whether telling a lie would serve the situation better. Perfect duties always revolve around the truth because, without truth, circumstances, conditions, and issues can be manipulated, meaning it would not serve justice. If Kant were a leader in this era, many things would be done differently. Most leaders do not operate on truths but are controlled by a cartel that runs affairs behind the scenes. Kant would tell the truth and face the full consequences.
John Stuart Mill
John Stuart Mill was of British origin. He was a civil servant, a philosopher, and a political economist whose effort was recognized in the political and social theories and political economy. Mill supported the practical theory that was proposed by Jeremy Bentham. He, Mill, founded the philosophy of liberty, which addresses the nature and the limits that society can exercise power over a person.
