Something that always comes into my mind when I reflect on what I want in the future is how do I reduce disparities in the education system? A major issue with the current approach is that many students, especially from Black and poor neighborhoods, undergo a wide array of disparities. The US spends the highest percentage of its economic resources on education compared to other countries like Canada, Germany, and Estonia. In the US, the US has the highest percentage of disadvantaged students in the lowest percentile at 10.8%, while countries like Canada, the rate is 2.3% (Hocker, 2020). The US is also the country with the largest disparities due to cultural, social, and economic status. Disparities are common in the US education system, and as a teacher, I think this is one of the issues that I intend to deal with as I progress through my career.
I believe teachers are responsible, not just as educators, but also as influential stakeholders in dealing with a wide array of issues that faces the education system. The main problem is the inputs and outputs in the education system. Despite a large amount of resources, the outcomes are not a reflection of the investment (Hocker, 2020). The quality of education has been impacted due to disparities, which means that not all people have the same level of access to education. White students have systematically had more education opportunities than Black students, which has been a significant factor that has led to inequalities in education.
Due to systemic racism and the history of the country, Blacks tend to experience more issues regarding accessing quality education, which was why literacy tests were used to prevent freed Black men from voting (Farrar, 2017). Until 1954, Blacks were only allowed to attend segregated schools, which meant that the quality of education was poor despite the adoption of a similar curriculum. I believe that many developments have occurred over the years to improve the education system. This has been vital to improve the education system while enhancing access for black students. For example, the Brown v. Board of Education case concluded that segregated schools were unconstitutional after Linda Brown filed a lawsuit for being denied access to a white-only school (Bill of Rights Institute, ...
