Introduction
Every discipline of study has specific terms and language through which it is understood. Similarly, the music genre also has various terms through which it is well understood. In order to have a clear understanding of music, one of the main aspects of consideration is the theme. Theme in music is best described as the general outline in each piece of music. It is that thought that sparks in the mind of a listener when they first hear the melody. Theme is about the main subject of the music and the purpose of the music. In this discussion, the aspect of theme has been explored deeper.
Theme Explained
Music as a piece has various components all of which when combined make the melody that is sweet to the ears. Theme in any music is the coral stone and foundation upon which the rest of the composition is based (Martin, 2012). Themes in music are classified into two main categories. A theme can either be rhythmic meaning it changes with different rhythms throughout the music. It can also be melodic, meaning; it remains constant with the melody. Themes tend to be repetitive despite the fact that they may change in their pace at different intervals in the music.
Role of theme in Music
As mentioned, theme in music sets the pace upon which the rest of the composition is based. It is through the theme that the tone of the music will be set. Although it is not always that a theme will be recognized at the beginning of a piece, it is often the determining factor as to whether the audience will like the rest of the piece or not. A catchy theme will often be captivating to the listener while the vice versa is true.
Theme has a direct effect on the mood of the audience (Martin, 2012). Being the basis upon which the rest of the composition is established, inability to have a striking theme in music will consequently means that there will be a struggle to capture the audience’s attention. With the mood influenced by the theme, so will be the environment. An emotional theme for example will lead to emotional mood. Consequently, the environment around and among the audience will turn emotional.
