Background
The movie “Farewell My Concubine” 霸王别姬 directed by Chen Kaige, focuses on Chinese history, with emphasis on the development of the Chinese opera. The main characters are two opera singers Cheng Dieyi and Duan Xiaolou as well as Xiaolou’s wife, Juxian. The relationship between the two integrates the cultural space and the early 20th-century historical context (Chen et al., 1993). The film considers the main characters’ point of view in their relationship, performance arts, power relations, and politics. The life of the main characters and conflicts in their relationship is linked to china’s history, culture, and environment in Chinese opera. The elaborate and costumes are a common feature of colorful presentations that contrast with the much darker early life and the rigorous training they went through. The focus on the artistic quality highlights the country’s cultural tradition, but the film is also a historical reconstruction, which focuses on power relations. Cheng’s identity and attraction to Duan and traditional Chinese opera are recurring themes in the film.
Cheng’s identity and love for Duan
      The two Peking opera singers Cheng and Duan grew up learning to perform from a young age, but the traditional Chinese society, Cheng is unconventional for always being cast in female roles. Chen cast Cheng’s character to link his life history with the turbulent 20th century China. Cheng was at first apprehensive when he was cast in the same role numerous times, and the roles were chosen as Cheng appeared delicate, but he became comfortable with these roles.  Cheng played female roles from a young age, while. Duan played male roles in Chinese opera. The subject of Cheng’s love for Duan is a controversial one even as Chinese traditional theater and opera have female impersonation. There are clear male and female roles and responsibilities in real life, and impersonation is only confined to theatrical performances.
Chinese cinema focused on traditional family setups and Cheng’s identity, but Chen goes beyond this and addresses the issue of Cheng’s attraction to a fellow man. In the patriarchal Chinese system there is differentiation that reinforces perceptions about the place and role of men and women in the society. However, Cheng is different and this makes him feel like an outsider. In the opening sequence, the film focuses on Cheng’s early life, challenges, and relationship with Duan and Juxian, a former prostitute turned wife who barely focuses on their relationship with the other two main characters. Cheng and Duan reconnected later after many years, but their relationship was awkward, and they maintain distance between them as though they are uncomfortable with each other.
