The Degree of Friendship Created Between the Protagonist and Andre

The plot revolves around a friendship between two boys who have built a deep bond. Cal, Andre's best friend who died of Aids, had kept the disease's existence a secret until his death. More crucially, the story focuses on the mother's sorrow while her child is still alive. The amount of sorrow the mother feels at the end of the story is one of the story's climaxes. Also highlighted is the degree of friendship created between the protagonist and Andre throughout the time when Cal and Andrew's mother laments everything they did not do while he was still alive.

The story begins chronologically, with the narrator detailing their character and role and their items, such as the white balloon that has served as the primary symbol of their feelings. The story progresses smoothly, beginning with a quiet environment in which Cal's sister and father remain until the climax of the story gradually builds up towards the end. In terms of foreshadowing, there are textual indications that something will happen, but those cues are too brief, and it is difficult to predict what will happen next if they are not stated.

The scenario can be confidently inferred that the story took place in a graveyard somewhere in the afternoon based on how they describe how the balloon climbs up in the sky as it grows smaller and smaller; they could not see the balloon clearly if it happened at night. Also, releasing balloons is generally done after burying loved ones. Hence the scene takes place in a cemetery. The cemetery may be a very symbolic place for letting go of past feelings and starting to live in the present and think about the future. Yes, the setting influences the characters' conduct as they vent their fury and forgiveness to those who have perished and those who have passed away.

Cal is undoubtedly the protagonist of the novel because he has the most lines and is the one who describes and knows the story of his deceased companion. Cal name does not immediately imply anything because it is a common name with no socially acknowledged connotation. Cal can become emotionally attached to someone he has known for a long time, establishing feelings and bonds that are difficult to forget when that person leaves or, in this case, dies.
