Aboriginal people have always experienced discrimination and oppression in one way of another. From simple neglect and prejudice and even to heinous crimes committed against them, one factor that keeps reoccurring is the issue of race. However, among the most exploited sectors of the society are not merely these marginalized groups, but specifically women who came from these societies CITATION Tay14 \l 1033 (Taylor, 2014). As according to studies, these women are the ones that are most susceptible to crimes such as human trafficking, rape, and even murder.
In line with this, two prominent authors have written about the experiences of these women in order to raise awareness among the public. Namely, these are Goulding (2001) and Campbell (1982), who have written seminal works entitled Just another Indian: A serial killer and Canada's indifference and Halfbreed, respectively. In this article, the author would conduct a critical analysis of these works and determine the underlying context that contributes to its effectiveness. All in all, the author believes that it is through the author’s personal experiences and the external circumstances during that period that creates such compelling pieces of lierature.
The Aboriginal Struggle
A reading of the books of the two authors would show that both of them were influenced by their personal exeperiences and the external circumstances in life. On the one hand, Campbell’s book was written in 1982, where she discussed about her own struggles, anger, and frustration as she was trying to integrate into the Canadian society. She stated how being a part ‘white’ and part ‘native’ create a huge disproportion in the benefits and rights that should be accorded to anyone. In fact, because of her broken family and the discrimination that she experienced, she became a prostitute and a drug addict at the same time. Similarly, aboriginal women and children during the 1980s have experienced the same, if not worse, kind of explotiation. As according to Johnson (2019), during the 1950 to 1980 period, hundreds of these women are placed in indigenous homes also known as the “sixties scoop”.
