Why I Think the Term "Didactic" Describes the Story (Gimpel the Fool)
Based on the events that unfold in the story, the narrative aims at teaching and instructing its audience on some moral lessons. The first aspect is that people should not take advantage of others' weaknesses to torment them further. Instead, they should help them overcome their deficiencies. For instance, everyone from Gimpel's town knows his weakness. They often try to trick him and find it amusing when they lie to him.
Consequently, it becomes one man against society when individuals get angry whenever Gimpel tries to disapprove of them. People find it easy to wrong Gimpel without remorse as they can easily convince him that he is insane. For example, he finds his wife having an affair with another man, but she manages to make him think he is hallucinating. The audiences also learn they should not get revenge against their enemies for the bad they do to them. For instance, despite being taken for a fool by everybody in his town, Gimpel resorts to selling poisoned bread as his conscious advises him (Singer, 1966).
Similarly, the protagonist loves his wife unconditionally even though she insults and is unfaithful to him. Gimpel also loves Elka's children because he provides for them despite knowing they are not his children. Another lesson is that mistreating others has consequences, as the whole town gets killed when Gimpel poisons the bread while on a revenge mission.
