The term Bildungsroman applies in the story as it traces the initiation and development of the primary character's manners. The boy, Colonel Sartoris Snopes, develops morally and psychologically even when faced with the dilemma of being loyal to his father's illegal activities and doing the right thing. He chooses to do the right and uphold his integrity to society.
The events of Colonel Sartoris Snopes, the main character in the story, make it a bildungsroman story. Notably, he develops psychologically and morally to do the right thing even if he is conflicted between his family's loyalty and society. He wanted to inherit his father's legacy, but he was morally different. His father believed in loyalty above values, while he believed in integrity and doing what was right. So even though he knew his father would be disappointed in him, he went ahead to warn the Despain against his father's intended actions to burn their barns.
Abner Snopes is a controlling father who believes in family and loyalty. He is depicted as an ardent businessman, but he still lives in a poor neighborhood compared to the white resident, no matter how much he tries. The story portrays Abner as a man who would do anything legal or illegal to make money. He faces injustices and is forced to leave the village with his wagon and family. He is also depicted as a trouble maker, and he keeps changing locations. This is evident when he attacks the two men in the store and intends to burn the Despain's barn.
