Boycotting the Sweatshops
This week's reading highlights why it is not advisable to boycott sweatshops and the consequences of boycotting them. The theme of boycotting sweatshops is heavily criticized for not considering why people and parents choose to work in industries requiring manual labor and long working hours. As Chelsea puts it, a study in Ethiopia showed that widows mostly applied for the strenuous jobs in big queues since it was a way of putting food on the table and linen on their children's backs. Moreover, Benjamin argues that the boycotts on child labor proved ineffective due to the advocates of the boycott not being able to differentiate between the exploiters and the genuine employers. Secondly, the children liberated from the exploiter did not gain any other support or compensation and were left without food.
Moreover, these organizations that push for abolishing sweatshops are primarily from developed countries where machines mostly do the production. In underdeveloped countries such as Pakistan, where child-made carpets are made, most of the work is done manually, which can be strenuous if one needs to make a living.
Sweatshops are also a result of capitalism which led to unionization and reduction of the working hour. Though credited to have brought an 'end' to child labor, the movie was the reason for the increase in sweatshops today. According to Benjamin, a country cannot have shorter working hours and expect the work to be done comprehensively and within the scheduled time, thereby increasing the strain and stretch on the available workers. ...
