SUBJECT: Sulfur Hexafluoride as a Contributor to Global Warming
The climate around the Globe has been changing at a fast rate. This concern has called upon unity among different sectors to understand and sought out the effects of global warming. This can be achieved through a reduction of carbon footprint. Electricity generating companies, for example, have a role to play. This memo addresses managers and stakeholders in the National Grid system to implement the Sulfur hexafluoride ban and seek better alternatives to reduce the carbon footprint. Prolonged use of SF6 gas has increased carbon footprint. Sulfur hexafluoride is classified as a greenhouse gas. The release of this gas from industries and power generating companies has been associated with increased global warming.
This research has been carried out as part of my thesis, and only the national grid system board has the authority to act on my suggestions. Having created time to review EU 517/2014 concerns on the use of SF6 gas, I understand the impact it has on the environment. When the regulation board EU 517/2014 was introduced, the use of SF6 gas was banned in most industries, especially those which had used this gas for an extended period (EUR-Lex, 2014). Some industries are allowed to use SF6 gas but under strict procedures and rules regarding leakage.
Sulfur hexafluoride has been classified as a greenhouse gas. The European Union Law of 2014 argues that absorption of infrared rays and their subsequent re-radiation back to the earth's surface leads to a rise in the surface temperature. Further research established that an increase in the earth's surface temperature leads to a significant disruption of the ecosystem, which causes global warming, also called climate change. This explains the need to identify alternatives to SF6 for use in industries. Sulfur hexafluoride is a significant contributor to climate change and global warming (Wallace, 2017). Continued use of SF6 puts companies at the risk of license withdrawal. Finding an alternative to replace the SF6 gas could improve a company's brand, image, and value due to its commitment to protecting the environment.
Various explanations prompt the need for alternatives to SF6 in regards to global warming. Wallace (2017) argues that the Global warming Potential of SF6 could be 23900 over 100 years, considering it has a lifetime of 3200 years, it is widely associated with global warming. According to EC regulation No 517/2014, emissions that contain high quantities of potential gases related to global warming are monitored regularly. The debatable concerns arising from the impacts of SF6 on the environment and the increased regulations have attracted academia and industries to look for a suitable alternative solution and eliminate pollutions from the SF6 gas.
Blackburn and Solutions (2017) states that SF6 gas can be used as a dielectric medium in the circuit breakers and switchgear. They also established that this gas has a global warming potential of 24000 higher than carbon monoxide. The study concludes by sta...
