The article outlines the Huston Independent School District (ISD) food organization's perspective on sugar in breakfast and the obstacles and exertions of the school in following the strict rules on nutrition set by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Main Points
The breakfast system began to help nutritionally disadvantaged children. The Health Hunger-Free Kids Act (HHFKA) developed guidelines for schools’ breakfasts and lunches to tackle the growing child obesity in the U.S. The current dietary standards recommend increased intake of vegetables and fruits, balancing calories and physical spots, low fat and fat-free dairy, whole grains, and a drop in trans fats, sodium, saturated fats, sugar, and cholesterol (Lengyel et al., 2015). The HHFKA recommend reducing sugar-sweetened beverages and added sugar in everyday meal to tackle the issue of sugar without compromising the quality of nutrition. Moreover, meat and meat alternatives are removed from the breakfast meals to maintain the calorie minimums. The Huston IDS provides students breakfast in class because 80% of the pupils come from economically disadvantaged households and obtain most of their nutrient ingestion from school foods (Lengyel et al., 2015). However, IDS finds it challenging to follow the nutrition standards because of the inability to differentiate between natural vs. an added sugar, budget restraints, large learners’ population, and disposal and variability of breakfast items.
