Change is the only reality that is inevitable in so far as human existence is concerned. This is because change is a constant that equalizes all individuals regardless of their social class or level of intelligence. However, it is important to note that not all changes are usually perceived to be positive. In some cases, change can actually be perceived to be negative even though it does provide individuals with numerous positive benefits. According to Steven Pinker, who is an established and recognized psychologist currently teaching at Harvard University, there is a sense of pessimism in the world today. This is purposely the case when individuals tend to compare the modern world with their ideologies or perceptions or assumptions of what the past represented and how life then was. According to him, many people tend to believe that the world is actually getting worse today compared to what it was in the past. However, this is not the case. In actuality, the world is exponentially better than it was in the past.
First off, it is important to note that the current world provides individuals with better living conditions and more technological advances that continue to support health, life, and progress compared to the past (Pinker & TED, 2018). This is demonstrated by the overall decrease in child mortality across the world, which is one of the hallmarks of progress that modern developments in technology and medicine have supported. In this sense, fewer children die today than they did 30 to 50 years ago and this in itself is progress which essentially translates to the existence of a better world today.
Secondly, it is important to note that in the world today there is a greater degree of tolerance and observation of the law. Today, the world has fewer autocracies than it did 30 years ago, the world has a greater tolerance for homosexua...
