Analyzing Reasoning on Both Sides
This final writing assignment allows you to present an analysis of the best reasoning on each side of your issue. In the process, you will get to demonstrate some of the key skills you have learned during this course. In particular, you will demonstrate the ability to create high-quality arguments on both sides of an issue, to support your reasoning with scholarly sources, and to provide a fair analysis of the strength of the reasoning on each side. For an example of how to complete this paper, take a look at the Week Five Example paper.
Your paper must include the following sections, clearly labeled:
Introduction
Introduce readers to your topic; include a brief preview of what you will accomplish in this paper. (approximately 150 words)
First Argument
Present the best argument on one side of the issue. (approximately 150 words)
Express your argument in standard form, with the premises listed one by one above the conclusion.
Defense for First Argument
Support the first argument as well as you can, using academic sources to demonstrate the truth of key premises. You may also choose to clarify the meaning of key premises and to explain how your reasoning supports the conclusion (approximately 250 words).
Opposing Argument
Present the best argument on the other side of the issue (approximately 150 words).
Express your argument in standard form.
Defense of Opposing Argument
Support the opposing argument as well as you can, using academic sources to demonstrate the truth of key premises. You are welcome as well to clarify the meaning of premises and/or to explain the reasoning further (approximately 250 words).
Analysis of the Reasoning (approximately 350 words)
Evaluate the quality of each argument, addressing whether key premises are true and whether the conclusion logically follows from them.
Analyze arguments for any fallacies committed or for any biases that may influence either side. Do you feel that one argument makes a much stronger case than the other and why? (There is no need to “take sides,” only to assess the quality of the arguments.)
Support your analysis with scholarly sources.
Conclusion (approximately 150 words)
Provide a brief conclusion and summary of your issue and how it can best be addressed by critical thinkers.

Introduction
What is the most effective and powerful way to teach children the basic manners of life? Is spanking better than corporal punishment? Some parents believe that both corporal punishment and spanking ensure great child development, while some claim that parents should rather spend quality time with their children and explain things in a comprehensive way. They feel that neither spanking nor corporal punishment is good for the little ones as these can create feelings of restlessness, depression, and fear among them. The fact is that you do not have to punish or spank kids to discipline them. If you keep punishing them on a regular basis, they might lose interest in studies and commit serious crimes in the future. Psychologists claim that corporal punishment, spanking, and other physical punishments eventually urge children to disrespect their elders and devalue their younger. It apparently means that parents should describe things in a loving and caring way. In this paper, we will explain how spanking and corporal punishment can ruin a child’s entire life (Roe, 2013).
First Argument
Spanking is all about striking the buttocks of a child to cause severe, physical pain. Different forms of spanking parents opt for are paddling, caning, belting, switching, birching and whipping. In different parts of the United States and worldwide, working parents claim that spanking is the only way to teach manners to their children. According to Selwyn Duke, boys are more frequently spanked than that girls. In schools and at homes, they are spanked by either male teachers or their own fathers. Recently, the trend of spanking has increased in both public and private schools. Both parents and teachers debate that this practice ensures the success of children in examinations. The more they are spanked, the more they get disciplined, listen to their elders and act as their teachers and parents say (Duke, 2010). But the question is: can spanking guarantee sustainable physical and mental growth?
Defense for First Argument
Parents and teachers know that physical abuse is a crime; still, they spank their children considering that it is the only way to be assured of their success. Different cases of smacking or spanking have been reported in recent months, and psychologists claim that this has become a serious threat to the society. For example, fathers spank their children even for a minor mistake. Similarly, in schools, teachers physically punish their students or spank them using a rod or stick on a daily basis. They feel that it is not harmful to children, but a lesson they need to learn at any cost to amend their ways in the future. In some countries, nearly 100 million kids aging from 2 to 7 receive physical punishments from their caregivers and parents. Spanking, hitting or shaking are the most common physical abuses. There have been arguments that without spanking, children can never learn how to live within limits. However, any physical punishment should not be of a severe type, meaning minor physical punishments are okay to go with.
