Sounds in Poems
Poetry is an art that takes particular skills to make a good poet. To enhance a poem’s meaning, mood or rhythm, poets use special tools called stylistic devices. When used correctly and effectively, these devices lead to a good poem making it enjoyable to the reader. Examples of stylistic devices which I will also be discussing include true rhyme, alliteration, and assonance. True rhyme is a type of rhyme where there is a repetition of the same sounds, especially at the end of lines. Alliteration generally refers to the repetition of initial consonant sounds, especially of words closely following each other. Unlike alliteration, assonance is the repetition of vowel sounds of close words. I will go ahead to discuss their effectiveness in the next section.
True rhyme brings memorability and rhythm due to the similarity of sounds occurring mainly at the end of words. It also brings a sense of anticipation in the mind of the reader, which engages them as they try to predict the next word. An example of true rhyme is, “Of the sunken...
