Society and the Environment. Social Sciences Research Paper

Essay Instructions:

Project proposal (5 points) and final project paper (45 points) – both components are mandatory. This final project option involves you making some change in your lifestyle that reduces your impact on the natural environment or serves to bring about environmentally positive social change. This is intended to be a challenging and educational project whereby you can experience the structural, social, and cultural or other factors that constrain widespread social change along ecologically sensitive lines. You will select what type of change in your lifestyle you would like to make. Some examples of changes include becoming a vegetarian or vegan, giving up driving a car, purchasing only locally produced products, or perhaps trying to give up electricity use for a period of time. You may also choose to engage in some form of environmental activism. The length of time you will need to continue with this behavior depends on the difficulty entailed. I expect that four (4) weeks would typically be a sufficient amount of time for most types of lifestyle changes, although some may be much shorter (for example, giving up 100% electricity for four days would probably be sufficient). The key point is that the behavior must be a change – i.e., not something you do already. The project does not require that you are successful at making the change, only that you make a sincere attempt at it.
You will be required to make a short proposal (Less than 1-page) of what you intend to do (basically laying out the ground rules and duration of time you think appropriate) and explaining briefly why it is important for the environment. I may require that you make some modifications to the plan (for example, choose a different activity or change the duration of time). Once I have approved the proposal you should implement the change and I recommend keeping a journal of your experiences (note that you are not required to turn in this journal). You may find the change quite difficult and you may have failures at certain points – that is part of the learning experience. The final paper should be 4-5 double-spaced typed pages and explain (1) the details of the lifestyle modification you made, (2) the environmental significance of the lifestyle modification (including citation of appropriate sources to back up your claims), and (3) what you learned from the experience. You might want to visit the College of the Canyons Sustainability site or the resources provided on the “Web and Environmental Sociology” handout for ideas. You will be graded on how creative you are in developing and implementing your project and how well you research and write your paper. I will provide further details within the Canvas course.

Lifestyle modification
The energy source determines the carbon footprint, whereby energy efficiency reduces the carbon print and has received much attention with the growth of renewable energy sources. Direct or indirect actions by an individual and those one collectively affect in the environment, and there is a need to know a more sustainability initiatives and their effectiveness. Sustainability programs require sustainability advocates and leveraging opportunities to ensure that environmental issues are addressed. Energy sustainability projects are some of the most common as there is awareness about the impact of focusing on the environment and energy costs. Supporting measures to improve environmental protection and sustainability requires that the stakeholders work together to support sustainability efforts, and be willing to make changes.
Reduce the use of the private car
Driving less often per week will reduce Co2 the emission, and the transportation sector is one that heavily relies on of fossil fuels is mainly responsible for CO2 emissions. In particular, the road transport, which is the preferred mode of transportation in the US, makes it difficult to improve sustainability. The case for choosing this lifestyle modification is that less car use is associated with fewer emissions (Nurhadi et al., 2017). I will drive the personal car only twice per week and walk more and even share with others. There are other options mostly walking, and travel by public transport, but also riding a bike where foible. The public transport option and having various s occupants or passengers in personal cars will help reduce fuel use and emissions Furthermore, I will choose vehicles that are not old and damaged since they tend to be big carbon emitters.
Giving up and using less electricity
Giving up electricity during the day time will help reduce my electricity consumption and focusing on improving energy efficiency. Turning off the lights when not required also saves energy and will occur when lights are not required. Leaving the electronic gadgets on standby, that is, without turning off everything also consumes unnecessary electricity in what is known as "phantom consumption" as it increases the energy costs when equipment is plugged in and not switched off. This is an unnecessary expense that can be solved by changing behavior and using plugs that switch off when not in use. While I do not seek to change the bulbs in use I will seek more information on how those most efficient reduce energy consumption. Being energy efficient does not necessarily compromise comfort and energy needs are covered, and is most useful to reduce energy expenditure (Weldu & Assefa, 2017).
