Essay Due: May 28

Creative Voice (Re)Vision due: Week 10

If we catalogue the skills we will need to thrive in the workplace and in life in general, one of the most practical is our ability to make a clear claim and convince others of our stance. Our goal might not be to change minds, but to open them, and at least let people hear our perspectives. For this assignment you will practice this skill through writing, critical thinking, supporting evidence and lots of creativity.

Part One: The Essay

The assignment:

What is it? Write a 1200-word essay where you identify a problem at directly affects you. This should be something within your generation and in your community specifically. This is not the place to argue your stance on capital punishment or abortion (though these are worthy debate topics), rather, I want to see you talk specifically about something that directly affects YOU.

Who reads it? We do! This entire class will see parts of your argument. Who are we? Your peers. And me, your teacher. Remember that we all come from different places on the planet, different beliefs, different ideals. Try to craft your argument in a way that will speak to us all.

What is it for? Your job is to convince us first that this problem exists using specific examples from interviews (you need at least one cited in your final draft), any of the readings we’ve done in class, or reliable outside sources (though be careful of overdoing this).  After you have proven that this problem exists, your thesis is to argue what we should do about this issue. That means you must be able to prove that your solution is possible using evidence of support.

How to get started:

The next couple weeks, we are reading essays about issues that directly affect you. Make a list of topics that you might be interested in exploring. Be sure that you are not writing vague blanket issues like racism, or poverty, because you need to write a book to explore these. Your ideas should be focused very specifically on one aspect of the problem in one specific place.

Some possible topics include the following:

The state of education in your high school, your community, or here at UCSC

Work in the 21st century for people of your generation and major—but through a focus

Technology addiction as it relates to YOU—this would need a very specific focus

Homelessness or poverty in Santa Cruz or your hometown

A specific environmental issue plaguing your hometown, or Santa Cruz

Fear of school shootings

Trying to get work as an undocumented immigrant

Stress for university students

Essay Expectations:

This essay should be no longer than 1200 words.

You must cite all sources, whether it is textual, interviews or summaries, both in text and in your works cited page.

Use proper formatting as it relates to your intended major—MLA or APA.

Your essay has a clear organization that supports and proves your thesis.

You make a clear claim and back it up.

Your conclusion addresses the so what and argues for the urgent need of this situation to be remedied.

Consider the rhetorical appeals we discussed, audience, genre, etc. Craft your argument to persuade us of your stance.

Part Two:

The Creative Voice

During Week 10, each of you will perform a spoken word, TED talk, music video, song, story or film about the topic of your argument essay. You are not to read your essay, or create a Powerpoint of it. Rather, you are reimagining this piece in a different genre. While your audience is the same, the expectations of a performance or creative piece are different than a rhetorical essay. Please be aware of this as you craft your piece.

The details:

You will perform or record a 7-to-10 minute spoken word piece for our class on the topic you wrote your argument. You may reimagine this topic and craft it into most any form you’d like but your performance must include a lot of language use. Your goal is to entertain, inform, and inspire the class. You will not stand up and read to us, rather you will memorize your story (you can have a notes of up to 100 words) or spoken word piece.

The goals of this assignment:

  • The learning objective for this is to increase awareness of your voice and increase your skill in public speaking and presentation/performance.
  • To provide an opportunity for creative expression. The further you go in the world of academia, the more important creativity becomes. This is true in all academic disciplines, not just the artistic disciplines.
  • To develop a conscious awareness of your voice as one of your primary connections to the world. We spend a lot of time working on our writing in class, but in academia and in the world beyond the university, the ability to speak clearly and persuasively is just as important. Yet we rarely spend time consciously developing those skills.
  • To have some fun at the end of the quarter. Everyone who fulfills the basic requirements will receive an A (full credit). This assignment should not feel like a burden. It will hopefully be personally enjoyable and creatively satisfying.

Importance of Public Transport
Public transportation is an important service that offers mobility services to people. Commuters using public transportation are enabled to access various destination places, including places of employment, medical care, and recreational areas. People who own their own cars, as well as those who do not, use public transportation for commuting. However, the majority of commuters using the public transportation option do not own personal cars and must rely on that option. Use of public transportation improves sustainability and reduces the environmental impact caused by private cars. Additionally, public transportation creates a sense of belonging in the community through the development of a mass transit system. Chengdu, my home town, the government has set up several modes of public transport, although the town residents are hesitant to use these options. Nonetheless, the government is committed to encouraging town residents to use public transportation options for commuting. Environmental sustainability, security, and comfort uniquely place public transportation as an essential transportation mode that not only helps commuters access various destinations, but also saves the environment.
The society has embraced the private transportation system despite the dire consequences it has on the environment. Various economic activities are responsible for the production of greenhouse gases. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (APA), electricity and heat production contributed to a quarter of the 2010 global greenhouse gas emissions. Next agriculture, forestry, and other land use sector contributed to 24 percent of the global greenhouse gas emissions, followed by industries at 21%. Transportation came fourth at 6 percent. Buildings and others contributed to an estimated 16 % of the 2010 global greenhouse gas emissions (EPA, 2017). According to the EPA, China is among the top emitters of carbon dioxide in the world. In 2014, China ranked at position one in the global carbon dioxide emissions at 30 % (Boden, Marland & Andres, 2017). With such alarming statistics, China should be at the forefront to protect the environment and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Use of public transport is a perfect example that road users, especially in China, can adapt to prevent the worsening of the environment. With a considerable percentage of environmental pollution coming from the transport sector, using the public transport system instead of private means will reduce excessive emissions of greenhouse gases.
Apart from pollution caused by increased by motorization, traffic congestion is a major threat, especially in major cities. According to Le and Trinh (2016), commuters prefer comfort, convenience, and safety when choosing private transportation mode. Public transportation is efficient in reducing traffic congestion, and hence saving time and money. Traffic congestion cost economies significant amounts of money in addition to wasting significant amounts of time. I experience this challenge firsthand when traveling home, spending in excess of one hour in traffic jams. Furthermore, using public transport improves the quality of life of peo...
