When writing newspaper articles, journalists use different styles. Depending with the column, a journalist can use investigative, opinionated, research or narrative techniques. For instance, a writer or journalist who contributes to a politics column is likely to give their opinion on current political matters. The information does not have to be accurate because it is based on personal views. However, when writing for an economics or finance column, journalists have to incorporate research in their writing. Hence, financial or economic articles tend to include numbers, statistics, and expert views. In this paper, the author compares four articles from Reuters to identify their similarities and differences.
The first article by Leika Kihara covers the supply challenges that many manufacturers in Asia are now facing in the post-pandemic period (Kihara, 2021). In this article, Kihara includes extensive research in her writing. She does this by drawing information from different sources. This technique is similar to the one used in all the other three articles. All the four articles provide crucial information on current economic matters, which requires adequate research.
Every article should have a strong title. The reporters utilize strong and telling titles for their articles. A title should give away the content of the article. This helps to grab the attention of the reader. For instance, by reading Schomberg’s title, one understands that it covers only UK factories (Schomberg, 2021). Another common feature in all the articles involves the use of short first paragraphs. Short first paragraphs make the article interesting for the reader. They highlight the main point of the news article.
The reporters also make use of expert views. They do this by incorporating quotes from economists in various countries. Providing expert opinion in an article helps to improve its credibility. Also, it prevents bias because experts are likely to provide different views. When readers analyze the various views provided in an article, they can decide what to takeaway. Still, in some articles, the news is factual. Hence, expert opinion is provided to add weight to the message. For instance, in his article, Schomberg uses expert opinion from one source to improve credibility (Schomberg, 2021). Another key feature that is present in the articles is images. In all articles except one, the writers include an image that is relevant to the story. The use of images in news articles is a common way of attracting the attention of the reader. Newspaper articles without images tend to attract less readers. They also tend to appear plain and uninteresting.
Due to the extensive amount of content available on the internet, reporters are also being forced to include the amount of time it will take to read their articles. Initially, this technique was developed by bloggers and other content creators. However, over time, it has evolved to include newspaper articles. At the top of their pieces, Kihara, Schneider, Schomberg, and Shankar note the time (in minutes) it takes to read their articles. Although this is a new trend, it is also...
