Significance of Obierika
Obierika functions as a counterpoint to Okonkwo. Obierika's demeanor, in other words, correlates with and accentuates Okonkwo's distinct character traits. With the exception of Okonkwo, who is impetuous, Obierika is a logical person who thought things before acting. Obierika, unlike Okonkwo, forbids the use of violence to exact revenge on the English settlers. Obierika is a pioneer who understands and supports the parameter settings and world societies that are infiltrating Igbo traditions. Obierika is open to new thoughts and responds to change, while Okonkwo is closed-minded and passionate about upholding African Traditional morals and heritage. About the fact that Obierika and Okonkwo have vastly different characteristics, Obierika regards Okonkwo as a comrade. He comforts Okonkwo whenever he is upset over Ikemefuna's death, despite his criticism of Okonkwo's role in Ikemefuna's death. As Okonkwo reaches solitude, Obierika offers him potatoes and seed-yams as well as gives him the capital. Unlike Okonkwo, Obierika questions Igbo practices and traditions, as well as regional law. Restructuring, he claims, would favor Igbo society. Even though Okonkwo's retaliation is to use force against the British, Obierika acknowledges that defying the British is too late. In Chinua Achebe's Things Split Up and Anthills of the Savannah, where even the strangers are seen as a route to influence, colonization produces characters that identify with the intruder. It also shows subjects who uphold long-standing customs and identify themselves through their opposition to outsiders. (Akwanya, 2019)
There are partnerships of complete opposites, such as Bert and Ernie from South Park, Mulder and Scully from The X-Files, or Chandler and Joey from Friends. You should add Obierika and Okonkwo to the list. As stated earlier, the two are best friends, but they are also total opposites, as shown by several occasions in the book. Obierika sometimes disapproves of Okonkwo's behavior and often warns him against doing so, but he is still there to console and support his friend in the end. Obierika, for instance, is outraged when Okonkwo joins a group of men who want to take Ikemefuna, a kid from some other community who has been brought into Okonkwo's house, out into the forest and kill him. Who do you think is after that Okonkwo murders the kid with his knife out of desperation and a need to prove his masculinity? Yes, Obierika consoles and comforts his mate, despite his rejection.
