Introduction
Teamwork and communication constitute a critical component of healthcare practice inclined to enhance patient safety. Ineffective communication during handoff is implicated within near misses as well as adverse events. Shadowing plays an essential role in handoff communication and teamwork. These approaches could also be executed to prepare healthcare workers and nurses during surge staffing contexts. Having an opportunity to shadow the nurse leader constitutes a necessary learning experience. It offers a chance to learn routine operations and tasks of the nurse and gain familiarity with the practice contexts that the learner would be practicing in (Sarver, Seabold, & Kline, 2020). This report describes a nurse leader shadowing plan and experience, including scheduled activities with intended outcomes.
Shadowing Plan
The shadowing experience is scheduled for August 30, 2021, at 11 am. The shadowing setting constitutes a nurse leader within the healthcare organization as they are engaged in their leadership roles. The nurse leader has been working in that setting for over two decades. I would also address issues related to the role of teamwork and effective communication with the practice context. I purpose to understand the nurse leader’s workflows. I hope that this would culminate in improved understanding of what happens within the particular unit and how I can collaborate with other healthcare professionals to enhance interactions between departments, resulting in enhanced job satisfaction and patient care. I purpose to understand how the healthcare leader handles her subordinate staff and patients within the practice setting. Another critical activity would be being keen to recognize challenges encountered when working in a specific department. In that way, the expected outcome relates to gaining a higher appreciation for the staffing needs of other clinics or related practice environments (Sarver, Seabold, & Kline, 2020). I thought it was increasingly valuable to recognize what other areas handle and their weaknesses and strengths.
Observations would reveal whether the nurse leader engaged in diverse activities about decision-making and coordination of patient care and treatment. Activities conducted by the nurse leader should relate to creating and monitoring a practical balance between patients, staff competence and staffing needs, including instituting changes to guarantee care quality, patient safety, and high-quality treatment interventions. The shadowing plan would include key areas that relate to the nurse leader activities: conducting an overview of patients and teams, and planning shifts, allocating resources, monitoring and facilitating patient flow, securing and monitoring information flow, enhancing patient treatment and care, assuring and securing patients’ effective diagnosis and treatment, as well as securing patients’ priority (Husebø & Olsen, 2019).
