It is a commonly accepted principle that every good leader is also good follower. This stems from the idea that leadership is about understanding the experiences and circumstances that individuals face before being able to make efficient, effective, and humane conditions. Despite its importance, however, being a good follower has its own sets of challenges. This includes both personal and environmental ones that could make it harder for leaders to assume this responsibility. In this article, the author would discuss about two of the most common paradigms embracing this principle, namely; (1) Servant leadership and (2) followership. In the succeeding sections both an overview and a comparison of both paradigms would be discussed in greater detail. Nevertheless, the author of this article believes that despite the inherent differences between the two, each of them are necessary in order to build a better organization.
Servant Leadership and Followership
Servant leadership and followership are two paradigms that are essential for smooth functioning of the organization. On the one hand, Servant leadership believes that instead of being served, it is the leader’s responsibility to serve others through his actions and decisions (Kenton, 2019). This follows from the popular phrase stated above that a true leader must adhere strictly to the rules, while also exhibiting empathy and compassion towards others as a form of service towards others. On the other hand, followership is the willingness and capacity of different members of a group to work and adhere towards the collective goals of the organization (McCallum, 2013). Although it might seem mostly procedural, it is also believed that this paradigm incorporates characteristics such as altruism and amity among others.
