Walter Mitty is a good fit for an antihero term used in the book for various reasons. First, instead of being dignified, bold, or purposeful, Walter Mitty is quite cowardly towards his wife and has self-interest in his delusions. For instance, the character must be ordered by his wife to put on his gloves since it is cold, something he does not want to do but must do because his wife dictates. Furthermore, he is required to wait for her outside the salon, and if he fails to do so, the wife threatens to summon him to her home for further explanation (Thurber, 1942). She is seen lecturing him about the speeding car, and she continues to question him but Mitty keeps quiet. All of this demonstrates cowardice and a lack of confidence in petitioning his demand. Second, Mitty's lack of ideology also causes his wife to treat him like a child rather than a spouse. This is owing to his infantile preference for fantasizing rather than living in the real world (Thurber, 1942).
This story also assists readers in comprehending why and under what circumstances the story is important. This, by the way, is true of most types of writing that matter to readers—either everyone who receives the piece of writing understands the situation, or the writer makes it plain.
