Who was the central character, and what was his situation at work and at home?
The central character in The Goal is Alex Rogo, the manufacturing plant manager of UniCo Manufacturing Corporation. He is an industrial engineer. The shipments were always late at work, and the company's production backlog was growing as inventories kept soaring. There was immense pressure because the inventory had to be worked on; otherwise, the company would shut down in less than a year. At home, Alex's wife, Julie, struggled with a small town's boring conditions, and Alex's long working hours put additional strain on their relationship (Goldratt, 2016). However, Alex becomes President of UniCo Manufacturing Corporation and starts spending more time at home after the company's operations stabilize.
Describe the character Jonah and his role in the story.
Jonah is a scientist, a business theorist, and Alex's former professor who helps him save UniCo Manufacturing Corporation. Jonah's role in the book is that of a mentor. He uses the Socratic Method, asking questions and pushing someone to reach a conclusion on their own, to ensure Alex maintains clear goals and operates within the manufacturing industry's constraints. Since Jonah represents Eliyahu Goldratt, he functions more as a guru than a fully-developed character because he has no background and characterization other than disseminating advice. He offers Alex vital pointers to look at when evaluating a company's deteriorating status; that is the missed shipping deadlines as well a the high inventories. Therefore, he happens to come in at the most important moment of Alex's career and management of the business.
How did Jonah suggest measuring plant performance, and how was this different from the way they had been doing it?
Initially, Alex and his team were trying to increase operating efficiency without a clear objective. However, Jonah suggested the assessment of throughput (the rate at which the company generates money through sales), operational expenses (money spent to turn inventory into throughput), and inventory (the money used to purchase things that the company intends to sell). Jonah's elements of measuring plant performance increase capacity at the bottleneck operations.
