After searching for a great university to join for my Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program, it dawned on me that the George Washington University and the University of Maryland are exceptional schools that would offer much more than just an academic experience. As a result, it was not tasking deciding which universities I would like to apply to in pursuit of the advancement of my skills as a nursing practitioner. These two schools have world-class faculty who actively engage their students throughout their course. The flexible scheduling of the classes is also a great motivator for narrowing down on the two.
These factors may be responsible for the caliber of alumni produced by the schools. The alumni have an exemplary level of expertise and knowledge of their skills. They are not only experts in their selected fields but also possess remarkable leadership skills. These collective leadership skills and expertise in my field are exactly what I am looking forward to attaining.
I chose to specialize in psychiatry since this is a field that is personal for me and close to my heart. I grew up with what I now know is anxiety and depressive episodes but did not quite understand what I was going through then. My anxiety shaped my social life and somewhat affected the kind of person I am today. If I had had knowledge and education on mental health, I believe I would have been easier on myself and judged myself less.
