School Uniforms
School uniforms are a common aspect of the education system. One of the common reasons uniforms are typical is that once students dress in the same style, it leads to equality. Uniforms are essential since all students will feel equal rather than being envious of others, which can occur when each student was expected to have their unique attire. Uniforms also ensure that students can focus on their studies rather than what they are wearing and whether they feel better. Despite the benefits, school uniforms also mean that some parents are faced with added costs. It forces parents to incur extra expenses to ensure that they only purchase quality school uniforms. School uniforms can also feel impractical for some students. Even though school uniforms ensure students focus on education rather than clothes, and makes them feel equal, I want to argue that students deserve the chance to decide what to wear since they are costly and uncomfortable.
The proponents and opponents from both sides agree that school uniforms are essential. School uniforms are advantageous since they ensure that students can focus on their studies. (Deane, 2015, 111). Once in uniform, the students can easily disregard the differences between themselves. Policymakers reveal that the goal of school uniforms is to reduce destructive behavior. Deane (2015) suggests that the purpose of school uniforms is that they make the schools better and safer. Anderson (2002) has a differing perspective since he indicates that enforcing school uniforms will make the students feel threatened because of the rules and restrictions. This will make them have a negative attitude about school.
The proponents of school uniforms believe that uniforms ensure that the school is more organized and safer. According to Deane (2015), school uniforms act to achieve social justice. This means that uniform policies function like a “veil of ignorance,” which allows students from different backgrounds, such as those who are too different, too brown, or too poor to be part of the same school (Deane, 2015, 115).
