The school where I teach has been very keen on ensuring that teachers learn about their students and their families. This area has been a key strength for the school. For instance, the school provides parents with opportunities to participate in school initiatives. There is a family resource center within the school where families of ELL students are invited and are made to understand that they are partners with the school. The center is full of information, in different languages, about the education system in the U.S. Also, parents are given an opportunity, especially during parent-teacher meetings, to suggest ways in which they want to be more involved. As suggested by Burr, Haas, and Ferriere (2015) parent involvement and engagement are “a key source of information” about the student’s background and sources of difficulties in learning. However, the school has very few teachers who have an ELL or bilingual certification. Also, even other staff members, such as administrators, are not bilingual.
