Contagious, “Introduction: Why Things Catch On” (pgs. 1-27). This reading describes why some communications through social media are more popular than others. It should inform your thinking about which messages are effective in the social media landscape.

Read Christopher McFadden’s “A Chronological History of Social Media.” This piece will give you a history of social media’s development and evolution. As you read, consider how the history of social media may inform the new developments we might see in the next decade.

Read Jerry Seltz’s, “At Arm’s Length: A History of the Selfie.” This piece offers an in-depth exploration of one practice (taking a Selfie) that has been indelibly shaped by the evolution of social media. What other communication practices have been reshaped when they have moved to social platforms?

 1.After reviewing all of the assigned readings and viewings for this week, create a personal introduction that highlights who you are and your personal “brand.” You can focus on any one (or more) of your roles.

My intro: My concentration is public and media relations. I’m always passionate about media, and I’m currently a Media Coordinator in a media agency based in NYC. I use so many different social media platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, tiktok, Wechat, Weibo, Snap, etc. I love vlogging my life and sometimes I post it to YouTube.

 As part of your introduction, explain why you believe you have a quality or characteristic that can help your brand “catch on” (in the sense that Berger describes in Chapter 1 of Contagious).Use yourself to show that you understand why messages and ideas go “viral.”

Your introduction should include visual elements. This means it should be created in a format that allows you to use graphics, images, or video.You could even simply add images to your Discussion post. Be creative, but remember that you are not being graded on the quality of your image production skills.
