The issue of whether schools should wear the mandatory uniform has become a topic of debate for many years. In her article “Dressing Diversity: Politics of Difference and the Case of School Uniforms,” Samantha Deane points out that mandatory school uniform policies should be scrapped. In his article, “School Dress Codes and Uniform Policies,” Anderson Wendel points out that students must wear mandatory uniforms. People have different perspectives on the issue of mandatory school uniforms. Therefore, common ground can only be reached by allowing parents to take their children to schools they believe support their perspectives about school uniforms.
The supporters of children wearing school uniforms argue that uniforms are seen to restore order in the classroom. Uniform creates the uniformity that students need to concentrate fully on classwork. The classroom environment is characterized by many students from different backgrounds and ethnicities (Anderson, 2002). Therefore, the only way to create equality and avoid ethnic discrimination is by allowing students to wear school uniforms. When students learn about equality at an early age, they will transfer it into the other aspects of life. Such would allow them to make choices in life that rarely hurt other people because they have learned the aspect of unity and equality.
The opposers of mandatory school uniforms argue that the uniform prevents students from learning the importance of differences in society. They point out that the school environment ought to promote democracy and allow students to confront the humanity of others. Such can be best achieved...
