Collecting Data on a Health Need
To create a well-informed plan for a practical program, it is crucial to know the problem that needs to be addressed (gaps in community preparedness, the most at-risk population group, contexts of constrained resources to enhance preparedness) and the available resources. The needs assessment process entails collecting data concerning the current conditions of the targeted geographical area or the fundamental needs for the evidence-based change program. A resources appraisal ensures that the process of collecting data on available resources should address a specific risk or condition, in this case, obesity in adolescents. A resource and needs assessment of the community and the target populace helps determine the community risk, vulnerabilities and hazards, gaps, available community resources, and conditions that trigger the need for change. This paper addressed resources needs when collecting data on unhealthy eating habits among adolescents.
In collaboration with a community-based organization, the current resources available for understanding the mentored behavioral-change model that spans across the care continuum from academic to community contexts and mobilizes existing public resources for childhood and adolescent obesity management were identified (Narayanan et al., 2019). The data collection resources include: (a) federal school lunch policy, (b) collaborations amongst universities, children’s hospitals, medical schools, and school boards, (c) educational materials and parent newsletters, (d) health mentors. Community services constitute a critical resource tailored to improve the quality of life for obese adolescents. School counselors can also collaborate with community assets located within community agencies, businesses, and community-based firms to help students reduce their intake of unhealthy foods. School and community collaborations are also practical resources in addressing the problem of obesity in adolescents. Such partnerships include mentoring programs, home visiting programs, school-business partnerships, community and parent volunteer programs, tutoring programs, and parent educational programs (Dogan, Dollarhide, & Julian, 2021). Lastly, a local school wellness program can help guide the school district’s efforts in creating healthy school nutrition and physical activity environments (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2020). In this way, such programs play a significant role in data gathering on unhealthy dietary practices among the target population.
After identifying resources available to enforce a healthy lifestyle among adolescents, it is vital to design a table to show the available resources and gaps in the help.
