The use of color is expansively used to bring out symbolic meaning in the novel, ‘The Great Gatsby’. There are different colors associated with different characters as evidenced in the novel. The following analysis will focus on Gatsby as a character from the novel and the analysis will be based on color green. The color imagery in the novel plays a big role in helping the readers to develop a good understanding of the characters.
Gatsby is a major character in the novel, and the usage of the color green helps readers understand him deeply. A critical analysis of the novel shows that green is used as imagery for the pursuit of love and dreams. Gatsby’s love for Daisy is not hidden at all in the novel. The readers are able to see and feel clearly that Gatsby loves Daisy. To further demonstrate the amount of love that Gatsby has for Daisy, the author uses color green to show readers how much Gatsby loved her. For example, the author writes, “Involuntarily I glanced seaward - and distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far away” (Fitzgerald, 2013 p.169). The statement above was Gatsby’s demonstration of how much he loved and pursued Daisy; his lifelong love. The green color is a representation of Daisy and how much Gatsby longed to be with her.
