Reflective Analytical Essay on Literature TextsNameInstitutional AffiliationDate Literature often opens up your mind to real-world experiences. Authors recognize the fact that it is important to make their pieces to reflect the real-life situation to ensure the relevance of their content. This is one of the greatest discoveries that I have made after a closer look at the two texts that we have covered in this course. The two texts Things They Carried by Tom O’Brien and Beloved by Toni Morrison are a true indication of how a writer can narrate incidences which gets the attention of the reader. In most cases when reading the text, you will be required to take your time and visualize the narrations to better understand the intended message. I have learned that this visualization often happens when the reader relates the events with their real-life experiences. When I immediately began reading, Tom O’Brien’s Things They Carried, I got a certain feeling that I was in the company of the men who are travelling. The writer explains the things carried by men. The things that the men are carrying depend on a number of factors but most often they are the things carried by men when they are travelling. We are informed that they are carrying marijuana, mosquito repellant and chewing gum. It is at this point that the author clearly introduces the characters. In fact, the things the men are carrying depend on their own beliefs and priorities. Henry Dobbins carries extra rations since he is exceptionally large. He also carries the pantyhose of his girlfriend on the neck. Ted Lavender carries marijuana to cool himself down while Kiowa carries a new testament which is a gift from the father. From the explanation of the things they are carrying, the author clearly sets out the tone of the entire story, we are beginning a journey. The journey is to unravel the truth behind these men and why they are carrying these tools. Things are no different in the novel, Beloved by Toni Morrison. Perhaps to set the tone of the novel, the first line in the novels reads, ’124 was spiteful’. One can often begin to imagine why 3 is missing and as we later realize, it is used to Sethe’s third child who was missing. A tone of darkness and bitterness sets the entire story in the novel. In any case, the story is all about a slave going through a bitter life. In both texts, the authors have to try to help the reader to connect with real-life experiences. Another important thing that I have noted about the stories we have read is the ability of the narrators to narrate real-life experiences. Creativity is often involved in this aspect. As identified in my plan, getting the right characters who will fit each of the situations will help you create an interesting story. We do go through a number of experiences each day in our lives but have we really ever thought of writing a story out of the experiences? This was one of the questions lingering up and down in my mind when I was reading the two stories. In the Beloved, Morrison is trying to preserve the events that happened in 1856 for the future generation. The story is based on a true story of a Margaret Garner who killed her daughter to prevent her from getting back to the slave plantation. In the story, Morrison take...
