Introduction
The merchant marine is the civilian vessels like cargo ships and tankers that facilitate importing and exporting goods to other countries. These vessels are served by merchant mariners who make sure the products onboard reach their intended destination at the right time in the right condition and quantity (MITAGS, 2021). Merchant mariners' roles are diverse, but their ultimate objective is to ensure commercial vessels reach their intended destinations smoothly. I have been having the dream of working as a merchant mariner because of several benefits. This assignment discusses the reasons why I would want to take my profession as a merchant mariner.
Reasons I would want to become a Merchant Mariner
I have always had the dream of visiting different places in the world. Working as a merchant mariner will fulfill my dream of reaching different destinations while making the deliveries. Merchant mariners make their deliveries and pick orders for shipment from destinations all over the globe. Also, working as a merchant mariner will enable me to form close relationships and network with different people around the globe (MITAGS, 2021). The merchant marines normally require dispensable teamwork, and merchant mariners live in close quarters; this will allow me to have close acquaintances in my line of duty. Working as a merchant mariner will expose me to an environment to develop new skills (USMMA, n.d.). Working as a merchant marine requires self-discipline, knowing how to work as a team, having strong communication skills, and being resourceful. Therefore, the profession will enable me to develop those skills in the line of duty. Having such skills will put me in a good position to rise the ranks or be employable in other jobs.
