1) Is writing a technology? If so, why or how is it one? What makes writing a technology? What do the Kline and Postman readings say about this?
(*Note: for this question, it may be helpful to consider that Homer’s poems, “Iliad” and “Odyssey” were mostly likely not written down, and the two poems were 16,000 and 12,000 lines long, respectively, which had to be memorized.) So, what did writing enable people to do that they couldn’t do before?)
Write a page (250 words or so) explaining this.
2) In “The Meaning of Technology,” Borgmann discusses technology as “reality transformation.” What does he mean by this? Further, he claims that “technological devices inevitably disconnect us from reality and more often than not from one another.” If this is true, how does it apply to social media? If social media are disconnecting us from reality, then what are they connecting us to?
Write a page (250 words or so) answering these two questions.
