The Purnell Model and Cultural Competency
The Purnell model has proven to be instrumental insofar as instilling cultural competency and awareness is concerned. This is mainly because the model enables nursing practitioners to consider the cultural backgrounds of patients in terms of status, gender, cultural beliefs and practices, education, and even socioeconomic status. In essence, by allowing nurses to be more considerate of these factors in their practice, this model facilitates a greater appreciation and understanding of other cultures that are not one’s own (Dreachslin, Gilbert, & Malone, 2013). This results in the development of cultural competency.
By training nurses to be more aware of their patients’ cultures and having them practice being culturally considerate, it becomes feasible to instill cultural competency and awareness that improves the experiences of both patients and nurses.
