Seeking competitive edge in China has become the order of the day and everyone seems to be in a race to outdo the other. People seem to be driven and influenced by fear of failure especially parents who wish their children will have better lives than them.
In its policy to reduce the population, the government of China forgot that people change and their dreams and aspirations as well. As a result of globalization, the world has become a global village and with information spreading faster than before, the little emperors have borrowed and adopted a different lifestyle which is well against what the government intended. However, having not planned for this, the government is having to deal with a highly educated and young population.
Parents seem to be trying hard to have provide the best for their children. Having had their dreams squashed due to various reasons, some parents are trying to achieve their dreams through their children. Parents seem to be sacrificing a lot for their children and as Fong puts it, “every child is raised to be at the top.” However, this often has its own repercussions because the parents as well as the government creates or works to instill certain expectations in these children. Conversely, when these expectations are not met, problems often emanate and this spells doom for China’s future.
