Born on February 15, 1820, in Adams, Massachusetts, Susan was raised up in a Quaker and grew up to be a teacher before becoming an abolitionist and feminist. She joined hands with Elizabeth Stanton to lead the National American Woman Suffrage Association before she died on March 13, 1906.
During her early years she developed the strong moral compass which helped her in working on social affairs in their society. She was the second born in a family of eight to local cotton mill owner. Her family moved to Battenville, New York, in 1826 where she started her studies in a Quaker school near Philadelphia. She later returned home after the collapse of her father’s business in 1830s to help her family in meeting their needs. It is after she returned home that she found the work of a teacher. In the mid 1840s they moved to a new farm in Rochester, New York where they became largely involved in the fight of ending slavery in a movement that was called abolitionist movement. Their farm was the meeting place for the abolitionists. During this time Susan became the head of the girls’ department for two years at Canajoharie Academy (Barry, 1987).
After leaving Canajoharie Academy, she devoted her time to social issues in the society. She attended an anti-slavery conference in 1851 an opportunity that enabled her to meet with Elizabeth Cady Stanton. She later joined the temperance movement that was fighting to limit or completely stop alcohol production and sale. While under the temperance movement she was aspired to fight for women after she was denied a chance to speak at a temperance convention due to her gender status. It is this time that she realized that women would never be taken seriously in anything unless they had the rights (Dorr, 1928).
