Introduction
Arnold Schwarzenegger is a household name not only in the United States but also across the globe. His fame grew out of his splendid performances in various careers, including bodybuilding, acting, and politics. In all the career categories listed, Arnold Schwarzenegger managed to reach relatively higher levels on each by winning multiple Mr. Olympia titles as a bodybuilder. As an actor, he attained a top-billing status courtesy of his action movies and finally served as a governor in the United States to wrap up his political career. Schwarzenegger managed to achieve all these because of his unique personality, which is enshrined in McCrae & Costa’s Five-Factor Model. The main highlights of his character include consciousness, openness to experience, and extroversion. This paper shall highlight how Schwarzenegger’s personality helped him become successful.
Schwarzenegger Personality Concepts
One of the traits in the Five-factor model of personality is openness to experience (Judge, Heller & Mount, 2002). This trait is exhibited when an individual is curious, thoughtful, and ready to take more intellectually, challenging tasks. In other words, openness to new experiences requires an individual to get out of his or her comfort zone and unconventionally try new things in a manner that challenges them intellectually. A perfect example is when an individual decides to do things differently from the expectations of his or her family members to attain a personal goal. This is more or less of what Schwarzenegger did in his first steps of climbing to the top.
One of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s six rules for success is the need for an individual to trust him or herself. When expounding on this rule, Schwarzenegger states that individuals need to dig much more in-depth on whom they want to be regardless of what other people say, even if it means breaking some of the conventional rules (Schwarzenegger, 2013). It is out of this reason that he managed to pursue his dreams of becoming a Mr. Olympia champion in America against all the odds. Schwarzenegger's parents were never happy with his involvement in bodybuilding with his dad preferring him to engage in some common sports such as soccer while his mom perceived him as gay since he had many images of bodybuilders in his room (Leamer, 2005). However, since he had the zeal to become who he wanted to be, he managed to win Mr. Olympia's title seven times even after getting into the United States as an immigrant. This aspect shows how Schwarzenegger was open to the experience.
Secondly, the Five-factor model of personality has extroversive as one of the traits in the personality type concept. Extroversive is defined as an individual’s ability to be more active in the social environment and having a lot of energy in his behaviors to the extent that his presence is felt (Judge, Heller & Mount, 2002).
