The brain is the most multifaceted organ of the human body that produces our memories, thoughts, feeling, and experiences of the world. The tissue comprises a complex of connected tissues and cells, which carry out different functions. Its mindboggling complexity and performance lay the foundation for this paper’s discussion on brain regions and the technological methods for scanning them.
Parietal Lobe
According to the video, when watching a video containing language errors, the front left part of the brain—the frontal lobe—processes the grammar and sequences the different kinds of information and language one is listening to and watching (The Human Spark). Additionally, when the words spoken are meaningless, the back left portion of the brain—the parietal lobe—deciphers the linguistic and words used, identifying the error. When using a tool, the parietal lobe sequences the information and starts planning ahead for the behavior to occur in the future. Also, when thinking about another person, the right temporoparietal junction, situated on the front right side of the brain, is utilized when one is wondering about other people’s thoughts (The Human Spark).
The parietal lobe is among the chief lobes of the human brain. It is located at the upper back and top of the head, behind the frontal lobe, and above the occipital lobes (Guy-Evans, 2021). The parietal lobes, located in both the right and left parts of the brain, account for 19% of the brain volume and rely on other brain parts to perform its functions.
According to Guy-Evans (2021), the parietal lobe performs several functions. It is the primary sensory area for processing aspects such as touch, pain, tension, cold, heat, and pressure after receiving sensory input from various body parts. The superior parietal lobule part of the lobe interprets signals from one’s sight, hearing, movement, touch, and memory. The lobe also facilitates the association of symbols and meaning, enabling the recognition of words, symbols, and language, facilitating drawing, reading, and reasoning (Guy-Evans, 2021).
Due to its essential function in sensory integration, damage to the parietal lobe can lead to severe consequences of failure to focus on visual attention, inability to recognize objects, and parts of the body, walking wobblingly, lacking body coordination, and being disoriented. One can also suffer from difficulties reading, writing, talking, doing mathematics, and drawing (Bisley, 2017, pp. 2-3).
Technologies for Scanning the Brain
An electroencephalogram (EEG) is a brain imaging test utilized to detect brain activity. It is conducted by a clinical neurophysiologist who attaches small metal discs containing electrodes with thin wires on the scalp to detect minuscule electrical charges produced by brain cell activity (John Hopkins Medicine, 2021).
