Provide an overview of the Code of Ethics that you have chosen. What are some of the major areas that are covered? Why are these important to the profession?

It is critical to note that the code of ethics outlines the organization's values and missions and determines how the professionals are expected to address underlying problems. Most importantly, a code of ethics sets out rules that individuals in an organization use to govern and control their decision-making processes and ensure that they distinguish between right and wrong. A code of ethics is critical in all healthcare fields because it clarifies the roles and responsibilities, and it also provides guidance to practitioners to enable them to address critical ethical questions. The principles of an ethical code help healthcare practitioners when executing their duties. The code of ethics is critical for nurses since it acts as a guide and a non-negotiable standard of ethics that reminds nurses about their commitment to society. This literature provides an overview of the code of ethics for nurses, evaluates the importance of ethics in the professions and examines some relevant areas missing from the nursing code of ethics.
Ideally, nurses are confronted with significantly complicated issues throughout their practice, and the code of ethics acts as fundamental guidance that practitioners have to follow in order to act ethically. Besides, the code of ethics also provided a guide that all nurse practitioners are required to use when making critical decisions. Also, the code of ethics for nurses is founded on nursing theory and practice, and it helps nurses develop values and virtues that are ideal for shaping and guiding nursing as a profession (Haddad & Geiger, 2020). It is critical to note that the code of ethics for nurses has undergone several changes since it was first developed in the 1950s by the American Nurses Association and these changes have been critical since the society has continued changing there is a need for nursing to meet the dynamic global nature of health. Also, the code of ethics for nurses is divided into nine provisions that set the standards that nurses are expected to uphold.
The first provision promotes respect and dignity, where nurses are expected to have high regard for other individuals and allow dignity when interacting with their patients and their families. Ideally, this is crucial since nursing practitioners are expected to maintain good relationships with their colleagues, patients and family members. For instance, nurses should allow patients to make decisions about their care (Haddad & Geiger, 2020). Additionally, the second provision promotes the primacy of patient interests, where nurse practitioners should be primarily committed to their patients. The code of ethics reminds nurses that patients are their primary concern, and both external and internal factors that can influence their job should be addressed before impacting patient care.
