According to Feldmann (2017), an effective performance appraisal has a positive influence on workplace culture, employee morale and organizational productivity. The process helps the management to correct, guide and encourage staff to improve their current standing. Employees are provided appropriate direction to develop their key skills and overcome their weaknesses to enhance their competitiveness.
Performance Appraisals as a Function of HR
Performance appraisal is one of the most important functions of the human resource department. Rao (2015) argues that human resource department acts as an intermediary in the process between the functional heads and employees. It is the responsibility of the HR department to work along with the reviewing authorities for the effectiveness of the entire process. The key function of HR in the process is to design a useful and effective performance appraisal system. HR must ensure that the entire process is transparent, timely and explicit. This facilitates employees, management and organizations to achieve their respective objectives. Another key function of HR is to provide valuable feedback to the reviewing authority by assisting them throughout the appraisal process. HR is responsible for fair performance system. They should provide appropriate guidance and training to the management to conduct a proper evaluation of the employees.
Components of an Effective Performance Appraisal
An effective performance appraisal includes some key components which help accomplish the desired goals and objectives. They include;
* Clearly defined goals and objectives.
* The performance appraisal should be a continuous process.
* 360-degree feedback and reviews from the managers, supervisors, colleagues and subordinates.
* Task-based appraisal and self-evaluation for the measurement of performance.
* Compensation and rewards based on performance and achievements.
Performance Appraisals Contribution to Organizational Goals and Objectives
Performance appraisal evaluates the performance of employees and reward, compensate, train or punish them accordingly. The process improves the efficiency of employees increase their productivity and work output ultimately helping organizations to achieve their targets. When employees are provided necessary training they develop new skills and improve their capabilities needed to perform in a certain position (Faseeh, 2013). The process enhances their job skills which assist in task accomplishments which contributed to the achievement of organizational goals and objectives.
