Isabelle Knockwood’s novel Out of The Depths illuminates the Residential schools in Canada by using the twenty-seven survivors who attended the Shubenacadie Indian Residential School. Using their experiences and treatments, we can echo the sentiments of students and authors in a broader area. The effects imposed by residential schools have had a long-lasting impact on communities and individual generations in a later period. In Knockwood’s novel, we can examine how the five factors promoting resilience are negatively affected by the experiences described in Out of the Depths novel.
The factors that came into consideration as far as resilience is concerned were the protective factors promoting stability. First, Coherence between our expectations of the world and outside experiences was hugely affected by the experiences in the novel. While new at school, Isabelle Knockwood found it hard to understand her teachers and Nuns since she could not comprehend much of the English, but nobody came to her support. She expected people to speak her language and easily understand her, only to find the opposite. She had to undergo resilience and try her best to learn the language, which made her undergo much with no secondary help. Besides, Coherence between our capacities and our opportunities to contribute is another factor promoting resilience that was compromised in the experiences of the novel. Children can build their identities through their parents by having repetition and internalizing of parents' values, behaviors, and mannerisms. Resilience requires parents or caregivers to act as emotional up heals for the children. However, in the novel, children were kept far away from their parents and caregivers, and rarely could they interact with them. As a result, their experiences and hardships could not be reciprocated with parental resilience.
Thirdly, Isabelle Knockwood's Out of The Depths highly compromised the Coherence between our stresses and our access to resources that can help us manage them. Relationships are considered basic human needs. Children must have a community around them for their support in times of need.
