Children and the adults react differently to mental disorders; for instance, in the diagnosis of depression, the nurse may observe the behaviors of children be different from that of the adults (Eby & Brown, 2008). Mental disorders make it difficult for children to achieve their developmental tasks. For example, the child may find it difficult to participate in group activities, or have role confusion. Mental retardation makes children have impairments in adaptive functioning; hence, making them have learning disorders such as reading, mathematics, disorder of the written expression, communication, and developmental coordination disorder. The nurses have the duty to adopt the teaching technique that addresses the type of the disorder the child has.
There are also pervasive development disorders such as the Autistic disorder, Rett's disorder, and childhood disintegrative disorder; they are characterized by severe impairments in areas of development such as communication skills and interaction activities. Nurses in charge of children with different disorders should know the major features of the disorder and apply the appropriate knowledge to individualize the care.
