"Many Rivers to Cross" by June Jordan is an account of a black woman’s life experiences that describes her challenges and general society expectations placed on her. The author uses specific and emotional cases in point (the ‘rivers’) she experienced in her life in the essay to express her points of view. She takes a predominant feminist approach all through the essay to describe the plight of women in the modern day society.
Jordan states, "We will not die trying to stand up: we will live that way: standing up". As such, she expresses attributes of toughness and confidence, which indicate an apprehensive dread of failing in life as she believes was the case with her mother.
